“The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face downward to the ground. So David triumphed over the Philistine giant with a sling and a stone. And since he had no sword, he ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill the giant and cut off his head.”
1 Samuel 17:49-51
Three things here:
1. David had to walk through his brothers who were being mean to him and discouraging him to even get to the place of fighting his giant. You and I have to go through brothers to just get to fight our enemies too. Keep going forward. Victory is sure in the Lord. Remember to not be the brother or sister who discourages others from God given divine appointments.
2. Saul tried to put his armor (his ideas, ways, vision, programs) on to David. David knew he could not fight his battle with another man’s gifting or strategies. God had a new plan, a new strategy, a new man (David…you too), to fight and win the battle in front this day.
3. David did what he was good at. He had already killed lions and bears (plural), so using his sharpshooting skills (think sniper), against a man who lived close quarter battle (think wrestler), was actually an unfair match for Goliath. The sniper would always kill the wrestler…always…David the sniper just needed to get through the opposition of his brothers.
BTW, did you catch it? The stone knocked Goliath out but did not kill him. David actually unsheathed Goliaths one sword and cut off his head, that is what killed him! Lastly, David’s heroism and single-mindedness apparently froze the only other person out on the field of battle that day. Remember Goliath had an Armorbearer who was like a Navy Seal. This guy should have taken up Goliath’s fight when he went down. Instead, we hear nothing of the guy who held Goliath’s weapons! When God is ready to use you he will take you from faith to faith (victory to victory). David’s faithfulness protecting his sheep simply led to his defending his nation. He was promoted based on his faithfulness.
